Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom: Schools Weigh Pros and Cons

As students return to School, educators face the decision of whether to allow the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the classroom. This is a topic that many districts in southeastern Wisconsin are carefully considering.

AI platforms, such as ChatGPT and Midjourney, have become increasingly popular among students. However, for those unfamiliar with these platforms, the language surrounding AI technology can be overwhelming.

Teachers and administrators have been working diligently to establish policies regarding AI usage in schools. While some AI products have been used appropriately by students, concerns have been raised about the potential for plagiarism when it comes to tasks like writing papers.

The question that educators are grappling with is whether AI can be viewed as a tool rather than a form of cheating. They are exploring what constitutes plagiarism when using AI, especially if students adjust, edit, and incorporate elements from AI-generated content.

Districts like Milwaukee Public Schools have already banned the use of ChatGPT on school devices. However, other districts, including Kenosha, Racine, Sheboygan, Mequon-Thiensville, Cedarburg, and Franklin, have yet to establish specific AI policies.

David Williamson Shaffer, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, believes that a complete ban or disregard of AI technology is not a viable approach. Instead, he suggests integrating AI into instructional practices, as it has the potential to transform both learning and the future workforce.

While some districts are taking different approaches to AI, one thing is clear: AI is here to stay. As it becomes increasingly commonplace in our lives, Shaffer and others believe that schools need to adapt and find ways to incorporate AI tools into their curriculum.

The exploratory phase is still underway, but the goal is to develop clear guidelines and policies on AI usage in classrooms in the coming months.
