Moderate Democrats Form Working Group on Artificial Intelligence

Moderate Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have established a working group on Artificial Intelligence to address the issue of potential restrictions on the technology. The New Democrat Coalition, a group of moderate Democrats, revealed the formation of the group, stating that its goal is to collaborate with the Biden administration, companies, and other lawmakers in order to develop sensible and bipartisan policies for this emerging technology.

Artificial intelligence has gained significant popularity, particularly with the advent of generative AI technology like ChatGPT, which has the capability to create human-like text using data. However, lawmakers are concerned about the potential risks AI poses, especially to national security, while also recognizing its strengths.

Representative Derek Kilmer, a Democrat from Washington state, will lead the group. The vice chairs include Representatives Don Beyer of Virginia, Jeff Jackson from North Carolina, Sara Jacobs of California, Susie Lee of Nevada, and Haley Stevens from Michigan.

In July, the White House announced voluntary commitments from AI companies like OpenAI, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms to implement safety measures such as watermarking AI-generated content. Meanwhile, in the Senate, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that lawmakers would hear from developers, executives, and experts later this year to explore potential legislative safeguards.
