#FactsFirstPH: Promoting Responsible Digital Citizenship

Digital technology is rapidly evolving, and while it can be used for social good, it has also been weaponized to mislead the public, cultivate hate, create echo chambers, and polarize nations. In light of this online landscape, being a responsible social media user is more important than ever. This is why Digital citizenship matters.

The #FactsFirstPH initiative, led by Rappler’s civic engagement arm MovePH, aims to address these issues through a five-part community learning series on Responsible Digital Citizenship. The series aims to highlight the importance of digital citizenship in practicing civic engagement and promoting media and information literacy.

The first session, titled “Understanding the digital world we live in and our role in it,” took place in Lipa, Batangas on July 19. It was done in partnership with De La Salle Lipa, LAVOXA Group of Publications, the Department of Interior and Local Government Calabarzon, and the Local Governance Regional Resource Center (LGRRC). Another session focused on the importance of facts during disasters and was co-organized by various disaster risk reduction and management experts and advocates.

The remaining four sessions of the series will be held virtually via Zoom from August to December 2023. The sessions will cover topics such as digital rights and responsibilities, combatting disinformation, staying informed in the digital age, and civic engagement and participation.

Interested participants can sign up for any or all of the sessions, but slots are limited. The series is in partnership with several schools and organizations in the Philippines.

To register for the sessions, participants can visit the designated registration forms for each webinar. After registering, participants will receive a confirmation message from MovePH. For inquiries, you can email [email protected].

Overall, the #FactsFirstPH initiative aims to empower digital citizens to use social media responsibly, combat disinformation, and actively engage in their communities.
