Australian software giant Atlassian has recommended that Australia adopt a traffic-light style approach to regulating artificial intelligence (AI) use. The company suggested that scenarios involving actual or imminent harms that are not covered by existing legislation be classified as “Red,” indicating government intervention is necessary. Atlassian also proposed that Australians should be informed when interacting with human-like AI systems, such as chatbots, and when AI is used to make decisions that significantly impact individuals.

Atlassian’s director of regulatory affairs & ethics, Anna Jaffe, emphasized the importance of educating consumers about the implications of AI. Jaffe stated that scenarios where the potential harms of AI are unclear or distant would be classified as “Amber,” requiring further thought on whether existing legislation already addresses the threats. Meanwhile, scenarios involving doomsday scenarios, such as AI attaining superhuman intelligence, were deemed “firmly amber.”

Atlassian clarified that it does not intend to enforce the traffic-light system itself but suggests the assignment of colors be done by advisory boards or other external entities. The company believes that “Green” represents AI applications already covered by existing laws but suggests the need for better education to build public trust.

In responding to the government inquiry, Google also called for changes in copyright and competition laws to facilitate AI research and development. Atlassian, on the other hand, is preparing to launch its own AI software, Atlassian Intelligence, in collaboration with OpenAI.
