A Breakthrough in Graphics Rendering: Pascal Gilcher’s Path Tracing ReShade Addon

Pascal Gilcher, also known as Marty McFly, is known for his popular ReShade mods, particularly his SSRTGI shader that revolutionized graphics enhancement. However, the latest buzz in graphics rendering is Path Tracing, taking ray tracing to the next level by abandoning rasterized effects for a path tracing pipeline. While path tracing offers superior graphics, it is incredibly demanding on hardware.

Gilcher has been working on a new work-in-progress path Tracing Reshade Addon, which is surprising considering it cannot utilize DLSS or RT Cores found in the latest GeForce RTX GPUs. Nevertheless, Gilcher is confident that the performance of his addon will surpass traditional methods.

Path tracing was showcased in the Cyberpunk 2077 Overdrive Mode preview, setting a new graphical standard for video games. However, only the latest GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards can run this mode smoothly with the help of DLSS 2 and DLSS 3.

Gilcher’s path tracing approach utilizes the ReShade API to modify game calls and customize rendering effects. By blocking or altering specific effects or objects in the game, users can achieve the desired visual enhancements. Gilcher has been working on the addon for approximately two months, addressing previous obstacles and improving its functionality.

His path tracing addon follows a voxel-based approach, similar to the SEUS path tracing for Minecraft. However, Gilcher’s method does not store the entire game space, using a sparse storage model to optimize memory usage. This allows for the storage of a significant amount of data without overwhelming system resources.

While NVIDIA’s interest in Gilcher’s work remains undisclosed, the Path Tracing Reshade addon is expected to offer remarkable visual improvements once released to Patreon subscribers. With the continuous advancements in graphics rendering, it is exciting to see the possibilities that Gilcher’s addon brings to PC gaming.
