Fire in Queens Building Leaves 93-Year-Old Woman Dead

A fire broke out in a mixed-use building in Ozone Park, Queens, last week, resulting in the death of a 93-year-old woman. The fire started on the second floor of the building on 101st Avenue. Kam Mei Koo was found unconscious and was later pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) determined that the fire was accidental and caused by a lithium-ion battery. Inspectors discovered that the cellar of the building was being used as an e-bike repair shop. In addition, the first floor had been illegally converted into an apartment with a constructed loft for sleeping quarters.

The property owner, who is the son of the victim, received two violations from the Department of Building. However, he denied that the e-bikes in the basement were being repaired.

The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential dangers of lithium-ion batteries and the importance of proper safety measures. Further investigations may be conducted to uncover more information about the circumstances surrounding the fire.

It is important for individuals and property owners to adhere to building codes and regulations to ensure the safety of occupants and prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
