Mitsubishi Plans to Manufacture Hybrid Models in Thailand by 2024

Mitsubishi is set to produce Hybrid models in Thailand by early 2024, with the Triton being a leading candidate. The company plans to manufacture plug-less hybrid vehicles at its factory in Thailand, which currently produces the Triton ute, Pajero Sport, Mirage/Attrage city cars, and previous-generation Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SUV.

While it is unclear which model the hybrid variant will be based on, Mitsubishi Thailand has also revealed plans to produce a hybrid version of the Xpander people mover for sale in South-East Asia and the Middle East. If the debut hybrid is the Xpander, it opens the possibility for Mitsubishi to expand its hybrid technology to other models, including the popular Triton ute.

If everything goes as planned, the Triton could be the first traditional hybrid ute in its class to be available in Australia. Production of the new-generation diesel Tritons has already started, with the first units earmarked for Australia due to be built in December 2023 and arriving in February 2024.

Mitsubishi’s global chief of engineering and product strategy, Hiroshi Nagaoka, has confirmed that the company is in the advanced engineering phase for hybrid and electric vehicle development. Mitsubishi aims for half of its sales to be hybrid or electric by 2030, with a goal to exclusively sell hybrid and electric vehicles by 2035.

Overall, Mitsubishi’s plans for Hybrid Models in Thailand indicate its commitment to advancing its electrification efforts and keeping up with competitors in the evolving automotive industry.
