Google Clarifies it Does Not Use User Data Without Consent for AI Training

Google has addressed concerns about generative AI and privacy commitments by clarifying that it does not use user data without permission to train its AI models. The company states that generative AI does not change its commitment to privacy but rather reaffirms it.

The use of generative AI has raised concerns among users who fear that their data is being used to train AI chatbots and large language models (LLMs). In response, Yulie Kwon Kim, Vice President of Product Management for Workspace Platform, has clarified that Google does not use users’ Workspace data without permission to train or improve generative AI and LLMs used in Bard, Search, and other systems.

Google Workspace also guarantees that the content users add to its services, such as emails and documents, belongs to them. The company emphasizes that it does not sell user data and users have the option to delete or export it.

Furthermore, Google states that it does not collect, scan, or use user content in Google Workspace services for advertising purposes. The company’s privacy commitment extends to all users, and independent auditors validate Google’s practices against international standards to ensure compliance.

Although Google does not use user data for AI training without permission, it can still use publicly available information to train its AI models. The company recently updated its privacy policy to clarify that publicly available information can be used to build feature sets and products like Google Bard, PaLM 2, and potentially future models like Gemini.
