WhatsApp Rolling Out Multi-Account Feature to Android Beta Testers

WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging app owned by Meta, is reportedly introducing a new feature to its Android Beta Testers. This feature will allow users to add multiple accounts to their WhatsApp application.

Currently, individuals who want to include a second account on their smartphone have to install a cloned version of WhatsApp. However, this workaround is only compatible with certain Android devices. The new multi-account feature in the latest beta version aims to simplify the process by offering an account switcher within the app.

The feature is currently available to a limited number of beta testers who have updated to WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.17.8. It is expected to roll out to a wider user base in the coming weeks.

Once enabled, WhatsApp will display a downward-pointing arrow icon next to the QR code in the settings menu. Tapping on this icon will bring up a card showing the primary account and an “Add account” button. Users can then incorporate an account registered on another device, and their recent messages will synchronize with their phone.

The new feature includes a popup card that serves as an account switcher. It displays the phone number associated with each WhatsApp account, making it easy for users to distinguish between accounts.

Previously, WhatsApp introduced a “companion mode” that allowed users to use a single account across multiple devices. However, users were still limited to one account per device. Some Android devices, like Samsung smartphones, allowed for “cloning” WhatsApp to add a second account.

This multi-account feature streamlines access to personal and professional chats for users who have separate accounts, offering a convenient mechanism. Notifications and conversations will be displayed separately, according to the feature tracker.
