Apple Patents Could Enhance Biometric Authentication Features

Apple has recently published three Patent applications that have the potential to enhance its biometric authentication feature, Optic ID, and enable its devices to read lips. The first two patents are believed to be applicable to Apple’s mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro.

One patent describes a multi-camera biometric imaging system, while the other patent focuses on the automatic selection of biometrics based on the quality of the acquired image. Both patents aim to improve biometric authentication and eye tracking capabilities. These documents were published by the European Patent Office.

Vision Pro, which made its debut at Apple’s annual developers’ conference in June, utilizes Optic ID for iris identification, allowing users to unlock the headset by wearing it. The device incorporates two infrared cameras and a ring of LEDs in the mask for eye tracking. It is expected to be released early next year with a price tag of $3,499.

The third patent filing, published by the US Patent Office, reveals how Apple devices, including its digital assistant Siri, could use motion sensors to detect a user’s mouth. This “Keyword Detection Using Motion Sensing” patent aims to conserve power by utilizing motion sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes instead of audio sensors like microphones. The patent was recently discovered by Apple Insider.

In addition to these patents, Apple has also been working on innovations in facial recognition software to address vision impairments in its mixed-reality headsets. In May, the company was awarded a US patent that enables binding a person to their digital ID through selfie biometrics.
