Dutch Innovation Policy Key to Safer, Healthier, and More Sustainable Nation

The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) has highlighted the pivotal role of the high-tech and manufacturing sectors in driving Innovation in the Netherlands. In their recent paper, TNO emphasizes the need to focus on pivotal technologies and control points in new global value chains to establish Dutch leadership and contribute to a safer, healthier, more sustainable, and prosperous nation.

TNO projects that by 2040, half of the total revenue in the high-tech sector will come from new value chains that do not exist today. While the Netherlands excels in fundamental research, the challenge lies in sustaining a leadership position amidst rapid global shifts. To address this, TNO advocates for a holistic innovation strategy that encompasses fundamental research, valorization, and entrepreneurship.

A key aspect of this strategy is a sharper focus on pivotal technologies and control points in global value chains. Control points are critical, high-tech links in value chains that are often knowledge-intensive. By adopting this long-term vision, Dutch Innovation Policy can significantly contribute to the nation’s goals.

TNO has identified three promising control points in new value chains:

– Energy Storage: The Netherlands has the potential to invest in the next generation of solid-state batteries, leveraging its expertise in crafting complex machines.
– Optical Satellite Communication: With the Netherlands leading in optical communication, laser satellite communication offers faster and more secure data traffic.
– AI & Photonic Chips: The rise of AI calls for more efficient data transmission methods. The Netherlands stands out in integrated photonics, which offers faster and more energy-efficient data transmission through photonic chips.

Additionally, TNO emphasizes the urgency of a more effective innovation chain to achieve rapid sustainability. Collaboration between corporations, academic institutions, and the government is crucial in driving innovation and research and development (R&D) efforts to meet climate objectives.
