Mercedes-Benz Cars Reports Strong Global Sales in Q2 2023

Mercedes-Benz Cars has announced that they sold 515,746 cars globally in the second quarter of 2023, representing a six percent increase compared to the same period last year. In the first half of the year, total sales improved by 4.6 percent to slightly over 1 million units.

An important highlight is the significant increase in sales of rechargeable cars, which accounted for nearly one-fifth of the total volume. The company sold 95,910 plug-in passenger cars in Q2 2023, marking a 51 percent increase compared to the previous year. This translates into an 18.6 percent share of total sales.

Battery electric car (BEV) sales nearly doubled year-over-year, reaching 61,211 units, including approximately 4,900 electric Smart cars. BEVs now make up 11.9 percent of the total volume, reflecting a new record for Mercedes-Benz Cars. Plug-in hybrid car (PHEV) sales also grew, though at a slower pace, with a seven percent increase compared to the previous year, resulting in 34,699 units sold. It is evident that the company’s main focus and potential lie in BEVs.

When excluding the Smart brand, Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars’ sales of BEVs more than doubled, reaching 56,300 units, marking a 123 percent increase compared to the previous year. The EQ family of models is quickly expanding, and the data shows the following breakdown: EQE Sedan: 9,000 units, EQE SUV: 10,000 units, EQS SUV: 5,400 units, and other BEVs: 31,900 units (excluding Smart).

In the first half of 2023, Mercedes-Benz Cars sold over 187,000 plug-in cars, including more than 112,000 all-electric cars. The sales figures for Q1-Q2 2023 indicate a 93 percent increase in BEV sales year-over-year, achieving an 11.1 percent market share. PHEV sales, on the other hand, decreased by five percent, resulting in a 7.3 percent market share.

In addition to car sales, Mercedes-Benz Vans reported 119,505 vehicle sales in Q2 2023, a 19 percent increase compared to the previous year. Of these sales, 5,100 were BEVs, accounting for 4.3 percent of the total volume, the same as last year. The van lineup includes the EQV, eSprinter, eVito/eVito Tourer, and EQT/eCitan.
