ChargePoint Announces Plan to Improve Electric Vehicle Charger Uptime

Electric vehicle Charging company ChargePoint has unveiled a new plan to achieve nearly 100 percent uptime for its EV chargers. The plan includes proactive station monitoring 24/7, the use of machine learning to identify and address faulty stations faster, and the integration of predictive analytics to ensure smooth operation.

ChargePoint currently has over 243,000 active charging ports in its network. These chargers are constantly monitored through its Network Operations Center, allowing for round-the-clock monitoring and quick issue notification to station owners. The company’s machine learning algorithms will automatically process data feeds, including social media mentions, to identify stations with problems and address them promptly.

While ChargePoint has not specified which social media platforms it will scan for complaints, it remains unclear if it will utilize the PlugShare app, a crowdsourced public EV charging station app, as a data source.

Improving EV charging network uptime is crucial as user satisfaction surveys have highlighted issues with public charging infrastructure. According to a JD Power survey from 2022, users reported problems with station access and reliability. Satisfaction with public Level Two charging stations dropped from 643 in 2021 to 633 in 2022, while DC fast charging remained consistent at 674. Among Level Two public charging networks, Tesla Destination ranked highest with a score of 680.

A 2023 Plug In America survey found that while around 90 percent of current EV owners are satisfied with their vehicles, they expressed dissatisfaction with the state of public charging networks. Broken chargers were identified as a major concern by 46 percent of users relying on public DC fast charging networks.

ChargePoint’s commitment to achieving higher uptime aligns with the new Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in the US, which includes a $7.5 billion investment in expanding EV charging infrastructure. To qualify for federal funding, charging networks must meet a minimum of 97 percent uptime.

ChargePoint is currently offering businesses information on installing DC fast charging stations and qualifying for incentive programs through its National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program page.
