TIER IV Partners with Axell Corporation to Develop Application-Specific System-on-Chip for Autonomous Vehicles

TIER IV, a pioneer in open-source Autonomous Driving Technology, has collaborated with Axell Corporation, a Japan-based computer hardware company, to conduct a research project focused on creating a new application-specific system-on-chip (SoC) and software platform for autonomous vehicles. The project, funded by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), culminated in a demonstration showcasing the power and performance advantages of the Autoware Accelerators.

The new SoC, optimized to integrate with the widely acclaimed open-source software Autoware, enables efficient execution of a range of Autonomous Driving algorithms. With an estimated power consumption of less than 150W, the SoC lays the foundation for the development of a complete Robo-Taxi system. The system also features hardware accelerators that efficiently manage high-load sensor data processing, resulting in a significant reduction in power consumption compared to existing environments. Additionally, a dedicated real-time operating system (RTOS) is seamlessly integrated to ensure seamless execution of control system processing.

With a focus on AI edge computing, the SoC aims to provide more efficient and reliable autonomous driving functions. The project’s results were obtained from a research project commissioned by NEDO.
