Chinese EV Battery Manufacturer to Invest $20 Billion in Plant in Morocco’s Sahara Region

Chinese electric vehicle battery materials manufacturer, Huayou, has announced plans to invest $20 billion in a plant in Morocco’s Laayoune Sakia El Hamra Region in the Sahara. The investment was confirmed by the regional investment center, following a visit by a delegation from the Chinese company.

The plant is projected to be completed within seven years and is expected to employ around 13,000 people. According to the regional investment center, the facility will have the capacity to supply batteries for six million cars annually, with the potential to export to Europe and the US. This move comes in response to the increasing demand for electric vehicles in these regions.

Morocco, eyeing a low-carbon future, has already unveiled plans to attract EV battery manufacturers as part of its efforts to develop its growing automotive sector in line with low-carbon requirements. The country has been witnessing a significant increase in the export of cars and their components, surpassing sales of phosphates and fertilizers this year.
