Philippine Coast Guard to Enhance Vessels’ Satellite Data Communication System with Japanese Grant

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is set to enhance its vessels’ satellite data communication system with the help of a ₱432 million grant from the Japanese government. This grant will be used to procure a state-of-the-art satellite data communication system for two of the Coast Guard’s 97-meter multi-role response vessels (MRRVs) and ten of its 44-meter MRRVs.

The grant, which is part of Japan’s commitment to a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” aims to improve the Maritime Domain Awareness and maritime law enforcement capabilities of the PCG. The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines expressed its belief that this project will contribute to a safer and more secure maritime environment.

On Tuesday, a signing ceremony formalized the grant project, with Japanese Ambassador Koshikawa Kazuhiko and Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo in attendance. This collaboration between the Philippine Coast Guard and the Japanese government highlights the strong partnership between the two nations in promoting maritime security and cooperation in the region.

By strengthening the satellite data communication system, the Philippine Coast Guard will be able to enhance its monitoring and surveillance capabilities, allowing for more effective maritime law enforcement. This development will further contribute to the efforts in maintaining peace, order, and stability in the region’s waters.
