Last year, Toyota unveiled an Electric Hilux Ute concept in Thailand, and recently, it was spotted in Australia. The images shared by the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA) show the concept vehicle, which is based on a HiLux single-cab pick-up sold in Thailand, at the Fremantle port in Western Australia. The purpose of the vehicle’s presence in the country remains unclear, but it is speculated that it may be displayed to mining companies at a convention in Perth. Mining companies have been significant buyers of privately-converted HiLux utes. Melbourne-based company SEA Electric signed a deal to convert thousands of Toyota HiLux and LandCruiser utes to electric propulsion for mining companies. Another Queensland company, Roev, has also developed an electric HiLux conversion package for fleets.

The concept vehicle features a CCS2 charging port and unique rear suspension. Although a production version has not yet been confirmed, Toyota has previously announced plans to introduce an electric pick-up to South-East Asian markets by the end of this year. In a presentation to investors, the vehicle was referred to as the “IMV BEV.” However, it is uncertain whether this refers to the electric HiLux concept or a second electric ute concept known as the IMV 0, which was unveiled alongside the HiLux in Thailand last year. Both concepts are underpinned by the same IMV platform.

The introduction of an electric version of the current HiLux may have implications for a battery-powered version of the next-generation HiLux, expected in 2025.
