Mahindra Aims to Lead in Battery Electric Vehicles

Indian automaker Mahindra has set its sights on becoming a leader in Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) with a goal of 20-30% of sales being BEVs by 2030. The company has developed electrified versions of its existing models and plans to introduce a bespoke BEV brand called BE (“Born Electric”) in the coming year. Both Mahindra’s existing models and the BE brand will use technology from Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, which is also used by models such as the VW ID.4/5 and Skoda Enyaq.

Mahindra’s partnership with VW Group was announced a year ago, and the two companies will work together through Skoda, which manages VW, Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini brands in India. In addition to its collaboration with VW, Mahindra recently secured a NZ$276 million investment from Singapore-based Temasek for its electric vehicle operations.

The company’s move to Electric Vehicles has been swift, skipping the hybrid technology phase. Mahindra’s first BEV model, the compact SUV XUV400, is already on sale in India. The company plans to introduce a facelift version of the XUV400 with a larger battery in the near future. Mahindra is transparent about its future plans, including the release of the XUV.e8 in December 2022, which will be an electric version of the petrol-powered XUV700 medium SUV.

Mahindra has invested in its own research and development facilities and buys components from VW, including batteries and motors. The company values the partnership for the integrated technology it provides while allowing them to customize their own platform for Indian market requirements. In addition to the BE brand, Mahindra is also developing EV options for its upcoming global ute and off-road vehicle, the Thar 4×4.

With its ambitious plans for electric vehicles, Mahindra aims to make a significant impact in the BEV market and establish itself as a leader in the industry.
