An Airbnb host faces costly electricity theft from guests charging electric vehicles

An Airbnb host in Anglesey, North Wales, has revealed the issue of Electricity Theft after guests used her plug sockets to charge their electric vehicles (EVs). Amanda, the host, received calls from neighbors who noticed guests hanging wires out of windows to charge their cars. Without any ports at the property or nearby, multiple guests used Amanda’s sockets and extension leads to fuel their vehicles, resulting in soaring energy bills. Amanda estimates that up to 20 cars have charged from her property, potentially adding £600 per year to her electricity bill. In addition to the financial impact, Amanda expressed concerns about the safety of her property and the potential fire hazards associated with using standard sockets for charging EVs.

To address the issue, Amanda advises other Airbnb hosts to install EV charging points to ensure the safety and security of their property. Peter O’Brien, CMO at eco-car charger firm Go Zero Charge, recommends that potential victims of electricity theft explore options such as contacting their energy supplier, reporting fraud, or submitting anonymous tips online.

Peter also provides expert tips to avoid falling victim to electricity theft, such as speaking to neighbors and having smart doorbells or security cameras to monitor unusual activity. Signs of tampering include connector clips, extra wires, loose wiring, burn damage to the meter, inaccurate readings, and an unusual amount of shocks and sparks in the home. It is crucial to engage the services of a qualified electrician to address any potential issues, as tampering with electrical systems can be dangerous.

If faced with electricity theft, it is important to report the situation to the appropriate authorities, such as the UK Revenue Protection Association, an energy supplier, or Stay Energy Safe. Taking proactive measures can help prevent unexpected expenses and ensure the safety of both hosts and guests.
