Several gamers have reported being invited to a public beta test of PS5 Cloud Gaming by Sony, confirming the company’s earlier announcement. The test allows players to stream games to a PS5 console at up to 4K resolution. While the details of the beta have not been confirmed by Sony, users on the gaming forum ResetEra have shared their participation and preferences for resolutions, including 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p (4K). The cloud save feature automatically loads players’ saved games, allowing them to pick up right where they left off. Cloud saves were not initially available in earlier versions of Sony’s PlayStation Now cloud gaming service.

It is unclear whether the 4K resolution refers to the render resolution (graphics) or the streaming resolution (image size). However, streaming games at 4K resolution helps to address the compression issues that can occur during cloud gaming. The compression of images for rapid transmission over the internet can sometimes result in a degraded visual experience. Streaming at 4K resolution helps to alleviate this issue, even for players without a 4K screen.

The available games for the beta test include titles such as God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Fortnite, Fall Guys, Destiny 2, Returnal, Demon’s Souls, Death Stranding, Sackboy A Big Adventure, Destruction All Stars, and Fall Guys. Trials for Resident Evil Village and Demon Slayer are also available.

Sony previously stated that the test would include “PS5 titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Game Trials, as well as supported digital PS5 titles that players own.” The company plans to add more games over time. The availability of PS5 game streaming on Sony’s upcoming Q handheld or other devices has not been confirmed. Sony has been actively hiring for positions related to cloud gaming, signaling its commitment to this technology.
