Fast-Moving Wildfire Threatens Gun Lake Cabin Owners

A man from British Columbia, Paul Kennea, narrowly escaped the rapidly spreading flames of the Downton Lake Wildfire near Whistler. Kennea and his neighbors managed to dodge the fire just in time on Tuesday. He described the suddenness of the fire and the extreme winds that accompanied it.

According to Kennea, the winds were unlike anything he had ever experienced before. The combination of heat, a whirlwind, and a tornado made the situation even more dangerous. Giant branches were flying through the air, and the air became hard to breathe.

Kennea had already moved his family out of their cabin at Gun Lake the previous evening, even though there was no official evacuation order in place at that time. The Downton Lake wildfire had been burning since July 13, slowly advancing through the steep, wooded terrain near Gun Lake. However, the fire quickly intensified on Monday.

Kennea had returned to his property to check the effectiveness of their makeshift fire suppression system, turn on the sprinklers, and retrieve some valuable family belongings.
