Johns Hopkins University has announced a major new investment in data Science and the exploration of artificial intelligence (AI). The university aims to strengthen its capabilities in harnessing the potential of emerging applications, opportunities, and challenges presented by the vast amount of available data and the rapid rise of accessible AI.

To achieve this, Johns Hopkins will establish a data science and translation institute focused on understanding, applying, collecting, and managing data. The institute will also develop machine learning and AI systems across various fields, such as neuroscience, precision medicine, climate resilience, sustainability, public sector innovation, and social sciences and humanities.

The institute will bring together experts in AI, machine learning, applied mathematics, computer engineering, and computer science. It will facilitate data-driven discovery and research activities across the institution. The institute will consist of 80 new affiliated faculty members from JHU’s Whiting School of Engineering, along with 30 new Bloomberg Distinguished Professors with cross-disciplinary expertise.

The new institute will be located in a state-of-the-art facility on the Homewood campus, equipped with advanced computational resources and technologies. The interim co-directors of the institute will be AI pioneer Rama Chellappa and KT Ramesh, senior adviser to the president for AI. The university will also conduct an international search for a permanent director.

Johns Hopkins President Ron Daniels believes that data and AI have significant implications for research and critical inquiry. He expressed excitement about the institute’s interdisciplinary collaboration and its potential to deliver impactful research.

The creation of the data science and translation institute aligns with Johns Hopkins’ strategic plan to establish itself as a leading academic hub for data science and AI. The university aims to drive research and teaching in these fields and amplify its impact globally.

In the 21st century, data is rapidly expanding across various domains, with the International Data Corporation estimating a fivefold growth in digital data generated by 2025. Johns Hopkins recognizes the transformative potential of data and AI and seeks to play a leading role in their development and deployment.

The university already has data-driven initiatives in place, such as the AI-X Foundry, which explores the collaboration between humans and AI to transform medicine, public health, engineering, patient care, and other disciplines. Additionally, existing programs and centers at Johns Hopkins, including the Institute for Data Intensive Engineering and Science, the Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence, the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare, and the Center for Language and Speech Processing, will contribute to the new institute.

Johns Hopkins University is known for its expertise in data science, AI, and machine learning through its Applied Physics Laboratory. However, there is untapped potential to utilize data, AI, and machine learning in various research areas across the university. With this new investment, Johns Hopkins aims to unlock the full potential of data and AI to drive research and discovery across all fields.
