French-Battery Manufacturer ACC in Talks for North American Plant

French-based Automotive Cells Co (ACC), a joint venture between Stellantis, Total Energies, and Mercedes-Benz Group, is in early discussions with officials in Canada and the United States about establishing a battery manufacturing plant in North America. ACC representatives have engaged with government officials in the province of Quebec, Canada, regarding direct funding, incentives, and grants for a potential battery processing facility. The talks are ongoing.

ACC has already announced plans for electric-vehicle battery plants in Germany, France, and Italy with a 7 billion-euro ($7.7 billion) investment. The company is now exploring opportunities in North America, but no specifics about discussions in the United States have been disclosed.

Automakers and EV battery manufacturers are increasingly looking to set up manufacturing plants in North America, benefiting from incentives and support provided by the Canadian and U.S. governments. These incentives aim to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals. The government of Quebec, in particular, hopes to attract investments in the EV battery sector due to its proximity to U.S. port cities. The provincial government has been financially supporting lithium explorers and battery manufacturers.

ACC’s potential plans for a North American battery manufacturing plant come in the wake of its recent resolution of a subsidy dispute with the Canadian government for an EV plant project in partnership with LG Energy Solution.
