General Motors to Recall 900 Vehicles with Takata Air Bag Inflators

General Motors Co announced on Tuesday that it will recall over 900 older vehicles worldwide due to Takata Air Bag Inflators that could rupture after an incident in Brazil. The recall will include 2013 Chevrolet Camaro, Sonic, Volt, and TRAX (Canada-only), and Buick Verano vehicles, with 767 in the U.S., 101 in Canada, and 46 in other countries.

The recall was prompted by an allegation received by GM Brazil that a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro was involved in a crash in May 2022, during which the front-driver airbag inflator ruptured. An inspection confirmed the rupture during deployment. The analysis is ongoing, but initial findings suggest a manufacturing defect may be the cause.

Out of an abundance of caution, GM has decided to recall all front-driver airbag modules containing an inflator from the suspect production lot. The company has stated that it is unaware of any other field reports of similar inflator ruptures in its vehicles.

Since 2009, more than 30 deaths worldwide, including 26 in the U.S., and numerous injuries have been linked to Takata Air Bag inflators that can explode and release metal shrapnel inside vehicles. However, no such incidents have been reported in GM vehicles.

GM has previously recalled 7 million vehicles from 2007-2014 models with Takata inflators. In total, over 67 million Takata inflators have been recalled in the U.S. and more than 100 million worldwide, making it the largest auto safety recall in history.

In related news, Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, recently warned 29,000 owners of 2003 Dodge Ram pickups to immediately stop driving after a fatal incident involving a Takata air-bag inflator. Stellantis also urged owners of 276,000 other older U.S. vehicles to stop driving following three crash deaths related to faulty Takata air Bag Inflators reported in 2022.
