Exploring Extraterrestrial Life and AI: Implications and Concerns

Just when you thought our cultural moment couldn’t get any more outlandish, there comes along a congressional hearing in which several high-profile individuals claim U.S. intelligence is in possession of “non-human biologics,” a euphemism for “alien stuff.”

In a recent YouTube interview, philosophers William Lane Craig and J. P. Moreland discuss the Implications of Extraterrestrial life and artificial intelligence (AI). Craig believes that the existence of extraterrestrial life would not impact his belief in God, but emotionally, it would be remarkably unsettling and a groundbreaking discovery.

The conversation then shifts to AI, with Moreland expressing concerns about its usage. He agrees with computer engineer Robert J. Marks that AI lacks true understanding and consciousness. However, due to its complexity, people may be tempted to interact with AI as if it were conscious. Moreland raises concerns about the ways AI could deepen people’s online fantasies, whether it is through crafting personalized worship experiences or fulfilling sexual desires through virtual reality.

Moreland worries that AI will replace genuine experiences, such as embodied worship in a church community or the intimacy of marriage and friendships. He believes that the Internet has already primed us for the incoming virtual reality revolution, but we were made for real-life interactions and connections, not a disembodied existence.

As we continue to explore the possibilities of extraterrestrial life and AI, it is essential to consider the moral and ethical implications they may bring.
