iPhone 15 Pro Models Will Not Feature Solid-State Buttons, Confirms Apple Supplier Cirrus Logic

Apple Supplier Cirrus Logic has indirectly confirmed that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models will not have solid-state buttons. In a shareholder letter, the company stated that a new product previously mentioned in shareholder letters would not be coming to market as planned. It also mentioned limited visibility into its customer’s future plans for this product, leading to the removal of associated revenue from its internal model.

Cirrus Logic’s high-performance, mixed-signal (“HPMS”) segment includes haptic drivers for the Taptic Engine in iPhones. In a previous letter, the company hinted it would supply related components for the iPhone 15 Pro models. However, its recent comments suggest otherwise.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had initially predicted that iPhone 15 Pro models would include solid-state buttons with additional Taptic Engines. These engines would provide haptic feedback when the buttons were pressed. However, Kuo later stated that unresolved technical issues had caused Apple to change its plans. The devices are now expected to have traditional buttons that move when pressed.

Cirrus Logic’s remarks align with Kuo’s updated prediction. The company’s largest customer is Apple, accounting for 79% of its revenue in the 2022 fiscal year. Analysts from Barclays believe that Cirrus Logic’s comments effectively rule out the presence of solid-state buttons in the iPhone 15 Pro models.

While the solid-state buttons may still be introduced in future iPhone models, Cirrus Logic’s insights suggest that the company currently has limited knowledge of Apple’s future plans.
