The Prison Service and the Police Service are currently investigating videos that appear to show drones being used to drop contraband items into the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca. It is believed that approximately seven drones have been flying into the Maximum Security Prison (MSP) day and night, transporting items such as cigarettes, wrapping paper, weed, cellphones, Wi-Fi boxes, and other unspecified items. This practice is not only a serious issue, but it also compromises the security of the prison.

The use of drones to smuggle contraband poses a significant threat, as weapons such as knives and gun parts can also be easily transported in this manner. Various recommendations have been made to address this problem, but officials are divided on which course of action to take.

While the Acting Prisons Commissioner, Deopersad Ramoutar, acknowledged the increase in drone activity around the prisons, he stated that most of the contraband dropped over the walls has been seized before reaching the inmates. However, Ramoutar emphasized that a technological solution is needed to fully combat this issue. He revealed that the prison has had to shoot down some drones and has special teams monitoring their activities.

Two video clips uploaded to social media depicted a drone dropping contraband for a prisoner. The inmate in the video can be heard commentating on the delivery. Despite records indicating that most drones have been intercepted, prison officials remain concerned as a single drone carrying weapons could create a dangerous situation within the prison.

Conducting routine searches and restricting the movement of prisoners within the facility have been attempted to reduce the smuggling of contraband. However, a more comprehensive and technological solution is needed to address this problem effectively. The use of cellular phone jammers has not fully resolved the issue, as Internet and Wi-Fi devices still manage to operate within the prison. The concern is that if just one drone manages to evade interception, it could pose a serious threat to the prison and the wider community.
