National Security Expert Raises Concerns Over Use of Chinese-Made Drones by Law Enforcement Agencies

A national security expert has expressed concerns that the use of Chinese-made Drones by many Law Enforcement Agencies in the Baltimore area may be compromising sensitive data by sending it to China. While some federal and state leaders have banned the use of these drones due to security risks, law enforcement officials argue that these drones are the best tools for ensuring public safety and protecting officers.

Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler explains that drones offer capabilities that helicopters lack. Drones can be easily deployed, stored in the back of vehicles, and operated by trained individuals who also serve in other roles. In addition, they are a much more cost-effective option compared to helicopters.

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office’s drone program has responded to numerous callouts, including the successful capture of a suspect hiding in a wooded area. The drone’s infrared camera was used to locate the suspect by tracking his body heat, allowing law enforcement to safely apprehend him without risking officers’ lives.

Despite concerns over data security, DJI drones remain the preferred choice for many law enforcement agencies in Maryland. However, four states, including Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee, as well as federal agencies such as the Departments of State, Interior, and Defense, have banned the use of DJI drones due to national security concerns.

Former Assistant Secretary for infrastructure protection at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Brian Harrell, warns that data captured by DJI drones may be at risk of being stolen by the Chinese government. He advises users to take mitigating measures such as removing SD cards and avoiding internet connections to reduce the risk.

DJI denies these allegations, stating that their drones have undergone numerous cybersecurity audits that prove no data is being sent back to China. They emphasize that their products are used to save lives and keep officers safe.

Despite the concerns, law enforcement agencies in Maryland continue to rely on DJI drones due to their reliability, affordability, and range of accessories. Agencies such as the Maryland State Police and law enforcement agencies in Annapolis, Carroll, Cecil, Frederick, and Howard counties all have drone programs that use DJI drones.
