Turkey’s General Directorate of Forestry Rents Drones from Baykar

Turkey’s General Directorate of Forestry has recently rented five unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones) from the company Baykar at a cost of 1.2 million liras per day. The company Baykar is co-run by Selçuk Bayraktar, who is President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son-in-law.

This revelation follows reports that the government has been favoring Baykar without holding tenders, causing a potential loss to the public. President Erdoğan had previously denied these reports in early May, stating that no funds had been given to Baykar by him or the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) government.

However, it has now been discovered that the General Directorate of Forestry held two separate tenders in April to rent six UAVs. The two tenders had a total cost of 287.6 million liras. Five of the UAVs were rented from Baykar at a cost of 183.6 million liras, while the remaining one was rented from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) for 99.2 million liras. These drones will be deployed at various airports across Turkey.

The six UAVs are scheduled to provide services between June 1 and October 31, totaling 152 days.
