Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service Approved for Use on Sensitive Government Systems

Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service has received Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) high authorization, allowing federal agencies to use powerful language models for tasks such as content generation, summarization, semantic search, and natural language-to-code translation. This means that government departments’ cloud apps can integrate with and adapt models like GPT-4, GPT-3.5, and DALL-E.

FedRAMP high authorization enables the use of a product in cloud computing environments that hold sensitive, unclassified data. It ensures that strict security and compliance requirements are met, making it suitable for government agencies that handle sensitive data. The Azure OpenAI service was launched in June, specifically for U.S. government agencies to run powerful language models within Microsoft’s cloud service, Azure Government.

Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer for Strategic Missions and Technologies, Bill Chappell, stated that the FedRAMP High authorization demonstrates their commitment to providing government agencies with the latest AI technologies while maintaining security and compliance. The authorization comes at a time when Microsoft is facing scrutiny for a recent email breach that exposed vulnerabilities in its products.

In addition to the FedRAMP high authorization, the Azure OpenAI service also received DoD IL2 Provisional Authorization issued by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). Microsoft highlights its strong data, privacy, and security protections for government customers, including encryption of Azure traffic within and between regions. The service is accessible through REST APIs, Python SDK, or Microsoft’s web-based interface in the Azure AI Studio.
