SpaceX Reveals Third-Generation Starlink Wi-Fi Router

SpaceX has quietly unveiled a third-generation Wi-Fi router for Starlink and is inviting selected users to test it, provided they are willing to pay a substantial amount. The company uploaded a photo and installation guides for the new “Gen 3 router” on the official Starlink support page, just days after the FCC granted equipment authorization for a new Starlink Wi-Fi 6 router.

The support page confirms that the router features 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) networking capabilities, a feature not found in the current Starlink routers. However, the documentation mentions that there are two additional Ethernet ports on the back, which are covered by a removable panel. These ports can be used for connecting wired mesh or other devices, such as TVs, computers, and smart devices. If more ports are needed, an Ethernet switch can be purchased to add additional ports.

The router also includes a dedicated factory reset button between the two Ethernet ports. It is compatible with first and second-generation Starlink dishes, as well as high-performance satellite dishes. However, if users want to use the router with a second-generation dish, an Ethernet adapter and the provided Ethernet cable will be required.

Currently, SpaceX is offering the Gen 3 router only to selected beta testers in the US. The price has not been disclosed, but according to one user on Reddit who received an invitation, they were asked to pay $200 to test the hardware. While not cheap, Wi-Fi 6 routers are generally expensive.

In the invitation, SpaceX mentioned that the Gen 3 router introduces Wi-Fi 6 and tri-band radios to Starlink, offering improved range, performance, and device support. However, for the router to fully utilize its capabilities, SpaceX will need to significantly improve the speeds of the satellite internet on Starlink. Current download speeds on Starlink have been “compromised” to approximately 66Mbps for subscribers in the US, a far cry from the 1Gbps and 2Gbps speeds supported by this particular router, according to the FCC.

It remains to be seen when the Gen 3 router will be available to a wider customer base.
