A South Australian company called Deep Liquid has unveiled a new innovation that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create personalized beer. The company’s founder, Denham D’Silva, has been working with top AI experts to develop this technology. Drinkers can complete a survey about their flavor preferences, and Deep Liquid’s algorithm then processes the results to produce a unique ale that matches their particular palate.

This development builds on Deep Liquid’s previous work in using AI to optimize the output of their craft brewery in the Barossa Valley. In collaboration with the Australian Institute of Machine Learning, Barossa Valley Brewing, owned by Denham D’Silva, launched an AI-generated beer in 2021.

The recent prototype “AI-generated ale” machine created by Deep Liquid deconstructs beers and then reconstructs them based on individual preferences. During a demonstration at the Beer and Barbecue Festival, participants were given different types of chocolate to try and then completed a survey. Based on their flavor preferences, the machine created a personalized stout for each participant.

Denham D’Silva believes that Deep Liquid’s work is changing the perception of AI by using it for positive purposes rather than manipulating consumer behavior. The company is considering offering the prototype as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) product for other breweries, helping them develop personalized versions of their existing beers.

Furthermore, Deep Liquid plans to expand their algorithm beyond beer into other beverages, including non-alcoholic options, opening up possibilities for personalized drinks in the fast-moving consumer goods industry. This innovation not only showcases the potential of AI in the craft beer industry but also provides small producers with a powerful tool to compete and cater to individual tastes.
