Race to Prevent Cheating: Educators Adjust Assignments to Outsmart AI Chatbots

Since the launch of ChatGPT, students have been utilizing the AI chatbot to complete their homework. In response, educators are making changes to assignments to prevent cheating while maintaining an authentic learning experience.

Many teachers have opted to ban the use of ChatGPT and similar chatbots for assignments. Some have turned to detection tools like GPTZero and Turnitin, but these tools are not foolproof, often falsely accusing human-written work as AI-generated. Blocking AI chatbots from school networks and devices is difficult, as students can easily access them through smartphones or other services.

However, some educators are embracing AI as a teaching tool rather than rejecting it outright. A survey of K-12 teachers revealed that 61% believe ChatGPT can have legitimate educational applications.

To make assignments more authentic, instructors are searching for new approaches. For Tim Bajkiewicz, a broadcast journalism professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, the challenge lies in teaching over 200 students at once, without the opportunity for face-to-face interaction. To address this, Bajkiewicz has modified his assignments for an introductory mass communication course. He detected bot-written assignments using an AI-detection tool and provided students with the option to submit audio recordings instead, to make cheating more difficult.

In writing classes, the use of AI chatbots presents a different set of challenges. Derek Bruff, a consultant at the University of Mississippi, tackled this issue by updating a writing assignment about the history of mathematics and cryptography. He asked students to write a blog post about a code or cipher system of their choice, making it harder for AI chatbots to provide pre-generated content.

As educators strive to outsmart AI chatbots, they are working towards maintaining academic integrity while adapting to new technological advancements.
