A Solution to Distinguish AI-Generated Content from Human-Generated Content

AI-generated content is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from content created by humans. Scammers have even used AI to impersonate a person’s voice and carry out fraudulent activities. Deepfakes are being used for propaganda, and spammers may use language models to automate conversations and deceive unsuspecting individuals. To address these concerns and establish a way to differentiate between human and AI-made content, a universal method is needed.

One potential Solution is the implementation of AI Markup Awareness. This would allow consumers to quickly identify whether a piece of text was written by a human or a machine. Software companies could incorporate AI markup awareness into their products, revolutionizing how content is managed, shared, and copied. Governments could also play a role by purchasing generative AI only from companies that mark their output in this way, creating market incentives for transparency.

Teachers could leverage AI markup to harness the power of generative AI while still valuing original thought from students. Additionally, brands aiming for AI transparency could commit to not removing the marker, making it a distinguishing factor similar to non-GMO labeling.

Fortunately, a solution already exists – Unicode. Unicode is the universal numbering system for text and is widely adopted. Each character in Unicode has a unique number and associated properties. By assigning AI-specific characters in Unicode, a fine-grained AI watermark can be created that works seamlessly across devices, platforms, and websites.

It is important to note that this approach does not serve as an enforcement mechanism, as malicious actors could still manipulate AI-generated content to appear human-made. However, the proposed protocol allows for the application of legal measures against negligence or wrongdoing. While there are limitations, such as language support and potential issues with text-to-speech tools, Unicode provides a readily available solution that can coexist with AI.

The adoption of AI markup awareness and Unicode-based watermarking presents an opportunity for society to better navigate the growing presence of AI-generated content. By distinguishing between human and AI-made content, individuals can make informed decisions and trust the authenticity of the information they consume.
