Netflix Lists High-Paying AI Position Amid Actors and Writers Strike

As actors and writers continue their strike over fair compensation and protection against the encroachment of artificial intelligence (AI), Netflix has announced a job opening for a Machine Learning product manager. The position offers an annual salary ranging from $300,000 to $900,000.

With 87% of actors in the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) earning less than $26,000 per year, the use of AI in film and television production has become a contentious issue. Negotiations between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), SAG-AFTRA, and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) have been strained due to the use of AI to generate scripts, create digital likenesses of actors, and reduce creative work payments.

The ongoing writers’ strike, which started in May, has now been joined by actors, threatening to bring Hollywood to a complete standstill. The Intercept has reported Netflix’s hiring of a machine learning product manager, whose role is to enhance the company’s machine learning platform to drive innovation.

Netflix’s broader goals for AI include shaping its catalog of movies and TV shows by learning successful content characteristics, optimizing the production of original content, and utilizing AI in gaming studios for generative AI. The latter can generate text, images, and videos from input data, potentially aiding in the creation of original content or advertising.

In addition to the machine learning product manager, Netflix is also seeking a technical director for generative AI at its gaming studio, with a salary of up to $650,000 per year. Disney has also listed several machine learning-related positions.

While Netflix and Disney embrace AI, concerns have been raised about the potential challenges of integrating AI into their business models. Disney CEO Bob Iger acknowledged AI’s disruptive nature and the difficulties it may pose in terms of intellectual property management.

The use of AI has become a major point of contention in the ongoing strike, particularly regarding the ownership and use of actors’ digital scans without their consent or proper compensation. The AMPTP has countered this description as a misrepresentation and an attempt to rally support for the strike.
