Manitoba Government Funds High-Speed Internet for First Nations Communities

The government of Manitoba has announced that it will provide funding for reliable high-speed Internet access to several First Nations communities. The province will allocate $100,000 from the Criminal Property Forfeiture Fund (CPF) to help connect eight northern Manitoba First Nations to high-speed Internet services, using Starlink Technology.

Improving Internet access is expected to bring numerous benefits to residents in remote First Nations communities, including enhanced living conditions and crime reduction. It will allow for greater access to remote education and training programs, crisis counseling services, victim support, and virtual court appearances.

The Justice Minister, Kelvin Goertzen, highlighted the use of satellite technology to bring efficiency and accessibility to the justice system in northern Manitoba. The funding will be used to support the Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police and the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO).

In addition to justice-related services, the program aims to connect vulnerable residents and youth in remote communities to MKO Youth Healing Lodge services remotely, providing more support for those in need. The communities set to benefit from high-speed Internet include Misipawistik Cree Nation, Chemawawin Cree Nation, Mathias Colomb Cree Nation, Mosakahiken Cree Nation, Bunibonibee Cree Nation, Northlands Denesuline First Nation, Shamattawa First Nation, and Tataskweyak Cree Nation, as well as an MKO youth healing Lodge in Thompson.

The CPF is funded through cash and proceeds from forfeited property and items, which can be used to compensate victims of crime, provide funding for victim services, and promote safer communities.
