Starlink Launches Officially in Malaysia, Bringing High-Speed Internet Connectivity

With an exciting technological leap forward, SpaceX’s Starlink satellite broadband service has officially launched in Malaysia, paving the way for improved high-speed internet connectivity. This service claims to provide faster broadband with lower latency compared to traditional GEO satellites, transforming Malaysia’s digital landscape.

According to Starlink Malaysia’s official website, customers can expect impressive download speeds of up to 100 Mbps. The satellite broadband plan is priced at an affordable 220 RM per month, with no contractual obligations. However, users will need to separately purchase the necessary hardware.

Potential users can experience Starlink’s revolutionary service through a 30-day trial. If the service doesn’t meet their expectations, customers can request a full refund by returning the hardware.

To cater to the diverse needs of users, Starlink offers two distinct hardware options in Malaysia. The standard equipment is sold at 2,300 RM and is designed for residential users and everyday applications. Meanwhile, experienced users and business applications may opt for the High-Performance option, which costs 11,613 RM. The latter choice boasts greater weather resistance and can provide three times higher speeds at temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius.

Both hardware kits include a motorized self-aligning parabolic antenna. Additionally, the Starlink WiFi router supports WiFi 802.11 up to 5ac with 3×3 dual-band MIMO. In particular, the high-performance kit features a larger dish and higher average power consumption, optimized for its target audience.

In terms of performance, Starlink indicates that users can expect download speeds of 25-100 Mbps and upload speeds of 5-10 Mbps for standard fixed plans. Latency is expected to range from 25 to 60 ms, similar to a 4G connection. However, potential users should be aware of Starlink’s fair use policy as satellite broadband remains a limited resource.

Interested consumers can now place orders for their Starlink kits through the website, with an estimated shipping time of one to two weeks.

The launch in Malaysia marks the 60th country where Starlink operates worldwide. It’s interesting to note that Malaysia becomes the second ASEAN country to welcome Starlink, following the Philippines.

Starlink received approval from the MCMC to operate in Malaysia on July 17, 2023, following a teleconference meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Elon Musk. The Malaysian government has already placed orders for 40 Starlink broadband kits for educational institutions, including UiTM.

The MCMC has allowed Starlink to operate as a fully foreign-owned entity in Malaysia, waiving the 49% foreign capital threshold imposed on NFP(I) and NSP(I) license holders, considering the substantial value and benefits that Starlink Malaysia can offer.
