Manitoba Government Invests $100,000 to Bring High-Speed Internet to Remote First Nations

The Manitoba government has announced a $100,000 investment to provide high-speed internet access to remote First Nations communities and improve the efficiency of the justice system. The investment will bring Starlink satellite technology to these northern communities.

The implementation of Starlink technology is expected to enhance accessibility to the justice system by connecting residents to virtual court appearances, victim services, crisis responders, MMIWG teams, and other support services. It will also allow for improved connectivity to education, training, and programming, which are instrumental in reducing crime and promoting public safety.

The province emphasizes that the introduction of Starlink will enable residents and vulnerable youth to access remote MKO Youth Healing Lodge Services. Additionally, First Nations safety officers will be able to communicate with other police agencies and efficiently share information with other participants in the justice system.

The technology will be introduced in eight Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) First Nations and a youth center. These communities include: Misipawistik Cree Nation, Chemawawin Cree Nation, Mathias Colomb Cree Nation, Mosakahiken Cree Nation, Bunibonibee Cree Nation, Northlands Denesuline First Nation, Shamattawa First Nation, Tataskweyak Cree Nation, and the MKO Youth Healing Lodge.

The investment of $100,000 is being provided by the Criminal Property Forfeiture Fund.

This initiative is seen as a significant step towards working together and addressing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. The quick setup time for providing an active internet link means that the benefits can be realized within days, rather than years.
