Chinese Ecological Progress: Paving the Way for High-Quality Development

In a recent conference on ecological and environmental protection, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of high-quality development backed by a substantial ecological environment. China’s advancements in the establishment of an ecological civilization mark a significant transformation from participant to leader in global environmental governance.

Beijing, the Chinese capital, has successfully transformed from a smoggy metropolis to a city with clear blue skies, standing as a testament to China’s commendable ecological advancement. This transformation has been accomplished by migrating from coal power to gas, applying stringent emission standards for coal-fired stations, enforcing stricter standards for industries such as steel and cement, and advocating for high-quality development with a favorable ecological environment.

President Xi Jinping also highlighted the building of a “Beautiful China”, emphasizing the necessity for a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. As the country progresses towards high-quality development promoting green and low-carbon growth, it plans for broader and stronger efforts for ecological and environmental protection.

China has also committed unwaveringly to peaking its carbon emissions before 2030 and attaining carbon neutrality before 2060, although it insists these goals should be determined by China itself, free from foreign interference. This strong stand is noted amidst ongoing discussions about the country’s carbon emissions, despite the United States being the highest historical emitter of any country.

China’s environmental regulation framework holds potential as a model for countries in the Global South to consider. The “Beautiful China” concept has a universal appeal, each country can adjust it according to its specific circumstances and development needs. Beijing’s transformation into an ecological metropolis serves as an inspirational case study for large cities in the Global South.

In the 21st century, China has significantly progressed in the development of an ecological civilization as a strategic national development policy. The country has made proactive strides in addressing ecological issues, further enhancing its position as a global environmental governance leader. By forming an ecological civilization with a focus on green, low-carbon, and circular development, China has aimed for a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, pushing for what could be called an “ecological renaissance” in the timeline of human civilization. This shift is deemed as necessary in ushering in a new era of human modernization.
