Trinchero Family Estates Stepping Up Sustainability Measures in their Wineries

Trinchero Family Estates, the largest winery in Napa Valley and second-largest family-owned winery, has significantly increased its investment in sustainability as it celebrates its 75th year of establishment. As part of this initiative, the winery has teamed up with REC Solar/Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions, underlining its commitment to a greener future. This partnership signifies a significant milestone in Trinchero Family Estates’ sustainability journey.

Trinchero Family Estates has decided to fund several sustainability initiatives across their four California wineries: Westside winery in Lodi, Main Street winery in St. Helena, Trinchero Central Coast winery in Paso Robles, and Green Island Road Winery in American Canyon. These projects, involving solar installations at each property, aim at reducing the winery’s carbon footprint and are set to be completed by the end of this year. Annual solar production across the four locations is projected to reach 11.5 million kWh.

At the forefront, Green Island Road winery has already completed its solar installation and transitioned to solar energy. The property houses a robust system featuring 3,168 solar panels and 18 50/60kW inverters, generating over 2 million kWh every year. REC Solar/Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions have designed these systems strategically, ensuring the system can adapt and expand in the future.

These solar installations will yield considerable solar offset percentages, contributing to a cleaner energy mix. At Green Island Road winery alone, the predicted solar offset may reach up to 95 percent, significantly reducing the winery’s dependence on conventional energy options. Estimated calculations show that, collectively, Trinchero Family Estates’ fuel cells and solar panels will self-produce 25.4 million kWh starting in 2024.

This collaboration enhances Trinchero Family Estates’ sustainable practices and reaffirms its commitment to minimizing environmental impact. Throughout its history, the company has shown consistent efforts towards implementing green initiatives. For instance, in 2008, rooftop solar arrays were installed at the Westside winery in Lodi, demonstrating the winery’s innovativeness. Moreover, vineyards and properties of Trinchero Family Estates have been utilizing 100% renewable electricity since 2017.

Demonstrating a holistic approach to sustainability, the winery incorporates sustainable farming practices such as electric tractors, irrigation pumps, sheep grazing for CO2 emissions reduction, bee populations support for pollination, and grape waste repurposing into compost. Ambitious sustainability targets have been set by Trinchero Family Estates, including water footprint reduction, high waste diversion rate achievement, and energy consumption and carbon emissions reduction. By 2025, the winery aims to utilize less than 3.2 gallons of production water per gallon of wine made and attain a waste diversion rate greater than 99 percent. The long-term vision comprises a carbon emissions reduction of 50 percent by 2030 and reaching net-zero emissions by 2045.
