Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Scientific Publishing

The Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC) recently released Guidelines on the correct and incorrect ways to utilize AI technology in the creation and critique of manuscripts considered for publication. The rules outlined the following points: AI can be used to refine the text of a Manuscript to increase clarity, AI cannot be recognized as an author, and AI is not permitted in the review process.

Despite its swift evolution and vast potential, there are complexities and uncertainties surrounding the use of AI. This complexity makes it critical to define precise rules to determine acceptable and unacceptable uses of AI-based tools in the publishing industry. These rules are expected to be regularly updated as technological advancements are made.

The guidelines highlight the possible advantages AI may offer to non-native English speakers when preparing their manuscript. They even encourage authors to use AI to enhance the readability of their text. However, if AI is used in editing a manuscript, it should be acknowledged in the manuscript’s acknowledgements section.

AI has the potential to reduce the time and effort researchers spend on writing various documents, from research articles, book chapters, grants to critiques. Furthermore, it can facilitate rapid learning in new scientific areas, improving overall research efficiency by allowing researchers to focus more on doing actual science.

Conversely, AI is not allowed during manuscript evaluation, including manuscript critique writing or decision letters writing. The use of AI could violate data privacy rights and could breach confidentiality. Uploading a manuscript to a public AI tool may allow AI trainers to access retained conversations and improve future tool performance, raising significant privacy concerns. There are ongoing developments in AI tools capable of generating raw data. Such data might be difficult to detect using current image analysis tools employed by publishers and journals.
