Rice University Engineers Develop Efficient Device to Convert Sunlight into Hydrogen

Rice University engineers have created a photoelectrochemical cell that can convert sunlight into hydrogen with unprecedented efficiency. This innovative device combines next-generation halide perovskite semiconductors and electrocatalysts, making it a potential platform for converting solar energy into fuels. The device achieved an impressive 20.8% solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency, setting a new standard for green hydrogen technology.

The engineers, led by Aditya Mohite, designed an integrated photoreactor with a key element—an anticorrosion barrier that insulates the semiconductor from water without hindering electron transfer. This breakthrough addresses the challenges faced by previous photoelectrochemical cells, such as low efficiencies and the high cost of semiconductors.

The device, known as a photoelectrochemical cell, performs light absorption, conversion into electricity, and power for chemical reactions in a single unit. It uses a semiconductor that is cost-effective, making it exceptional compared to other devices of its kind.

One of the lead authors, Austin Fehr, highlighted the significance of this work in addressing the hurdle of using sunlight to manufacture chemicals. The researchers aim to develop economically feasible platforms for generating solar-derived fuels.

The team overcame the instability of halide perovskites in water and solved the issue of disruptions caused by protective coatings. By implementing a dual-layer barrier, they achieved high efficiency and electrical contact between the perovskite layers and the protective layer.

The researchers demonstrated that their barrier design is suitable for various reactions and semiconductors, making it applicable in multiple systems. With further improvements in stability and scalability, the technology has the potential to revolutionize the hydrogen economy by transforming the way fuels are produced.
