Microsoft Teams Introduces AI-Powered Beauty Filters for Video Calls

In today’s world of remote work and virtual meetings, it’s natural to feel self-conscious about one’s appearance during video calls. Microsoft has responded to this by introducing a new AI-powered Beauty feature for Teams users. The company collaborated with cosmetics giant Maybelline to create a collection of “virtual makeup” filters that resemble popular appearance-altering effects found on social media platforms like TikTok.

The Maybelline Beauty App offers Teams users 12 unique looks at its launch. These filters go beyond simple blurring effects and digital makeup colors by providing a breakdown of the real-world Maybelline products and shades being replicated. Users can virtually recreate the makeup and then apply it to their actual faces using the corresponding Maybelline products.

The virtual makeup filters are powered by AI technology from Modiface, an augmented reality company specializing in the beauty industry. Modiface’s technology has already been utilized by cosmetics companies like Sephora and Estée Lauder. To ensure inclusivity and diversity, the filters have been developed in collaboration with the Geena Davis Institute, promoting improved representation within media.

While some have concerns about appearance-altering filters setting unrealistic beauty standards and negatively impacting mental health, there is a demand for such features in work-related applications. Other video conferencing platforms like Zoom have already incorporated limited beauty effects, but the Maybelline Beauty app in Teams takes it a step further by offering more options and customization.

The new feature is being rolled out to global Microsoft Teams Enterprise customers, with the possibility of making it available to users on the free Microsoft Teams tier. Users can easily access the beauty filters under the “Video Effects” tab within the Teams meeting settings. Whether for personal preference or professional presentation, these filters aim to enhance the video call experience for Teams users.
