Louisiana Students to Make First-Ever Call to Space

In a groundbreaking event, students from Louisiana will have the opportunity to make a call to NASA astronauts orbiting in space. The students, attending a NASA Astro camp in Lake Charles, will have the chance to ask prerecorded questions to the astronauts.

The two astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS), Dr. Frank Rubio and Woody Hoburg, will answer the questions. The ISS, which houses astronauts from multiple nations, circles the Earth in a low orbit.

Dr. Frank Rubio, a Florida native, is a board-certified family physician and flight surgeon. He was selected for NASA’s 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class and has a background as a helicopter pilot. Woody Hoburg, a Pennsylvania native, is a pilot and has a bachelor’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics from MIT, as well as a doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from UC Berkeley.

The event is expected to reach 300 students in person, with an additional 5,000 students participating virtually. It will be broadcasted at 9:15 a.m. on NASA Television, as well as on the agency’s website and app.

This historic call will be the first-ever from Louisiana to space, allowing students to engage directly with astronauts and gain insights into life and research on the ISS.
