For the first time in history, Louisiana Students will have the opportunity to make a call to space. On Tuesday, students from the Lake Charles area will have the chance to ask prerecorded questions to Nasa astronauts who are currently orbiting the Earth on the International Space Station (ISS). This special event, known as NASA Astro Camp, aims to bring hope and inspiration to Southwest Louisiana, an area that has been severely affected by recent hurricanes.

The event is expected to reach 300 students in person, with an additional 5,000 students participating virtually. Astronauts Dr. Frank Rubio and Woody Hoburg will be answering the students’ questions during the call. The ISS, a space station that orbits the Earth, is currently home to astronauts from the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, and Europe.

Dr. Frank Rubio, a native of Florida, was selected as part of NASA’s 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class. He has an impressive background, with a degree from the U.S. Military Academy and experience as a board-certified family physician and flight surgeon. Before his career as an astronaut, he served as a helicopter pilot and accumulated over 1,100 flight hours.

Woody Hoburg, originally from Pennsylvania, is also a member of the same 2017 astronaut class. He holds a bachelor’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California Berkeley. Hoburg piloted the crew to the ISS and successfully docked their spacecraft on March 3rd.

This exciting event will be broadcasted at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday via NASA Television, as well as on the agency’s official website and app. It not only provides a unique opportunity for Louisiana students to connect with astronauts in space, but also serves as a source of inspiration and excitement for those participating in the week-long Astro Camp experience.
