Apple Developing Generative AI Tools to Compete with OpenAI and Google

Apple is reportedly working on its own Generative AI tools, internally known as “Apple GPT.” This project aims to challenge popular language models such as OpenAI’s GPT and Google’s Bard. The development of these tools is part of a cross-functional collaboration within Apple, involving teams from AI, software engineering, and cloud infrastructure.

The initiative to create Apple GPT is driven by the company’s concern that it may fall behind its competitors in AI technology, thus potentially losing the essential status of its devices. While AI has already been integrated into Apple’s devices to enhance photo and video quality and power certain features such as crash detection, the company aims to deliver more AI-powered enhancements to its iOS.

Although Apple has not revealed a clear roadmap for the delivery of generative AI to its customers, an announcement is expected later this year. The framework for Apple’s generative AI, called “Ajax,” is built on Google’s Jax machine learning framework. However, instead of hosting its own servers, Apple relies on Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud for this technology. Ajax was developed to consolidate machine learning development within the company.

Apple has already rolled out an internal prototype of a ChatGPT-style generative AI chatbot for work-related tasks. Initially introduced as an experiment at the end of last year, the rollout was delayed due to security concerns regarding generative AI. However, access to the tool has since been expanded, although employees are prohibited from using its outputs for consumer-facing purposes. Insiders claim that the technology is similar to ChatGPT and Bard and does not outperform existing offerings in the market.

The integration of generative AI into Apple’s devices has the potential to significantly enhance Siri, which has historically lagged behind competitors like Amazon’s Alexa in terms of capabilities. This could lead to more intuitive and in-depth answers, narrowing the functionality gap between Siri and its rivals.

Furthermore, this technology could extend beyond Siri and enhance other key software products developed by Apple, including its iWork Suite, Final Cut Pro, Apple Music, and various other apps. Its integration could introduce new features and improvements, making these software products more powerful and user-friendly.

While Apple’s exact plans for the implementation of generative AI tools are yet to be unveiled, the company’s efforts to develop its own AI capabilities demonstrate its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements. By leveraging generative AI, Apple aims to improve the user experience and compete with the language models created by OpenAI and Google.
