From the Classroom to the Stars: One Alumnus’ Path to NASA

Jack Sieleman, a 2018 graduate of Waukee Community School District (CSD), has successfully made his way to one of the most prestigious space Engineering agencies in the world – NASA.

During his time at Waukee CSD, Jack took two APEX classes, Next Generation Energy and Engineering Technology & Robotics, which sparked his interest in the field of engineering. He also participated in theater production, where he gained valuable skills working on the light and sound crews.

Jack credits his growth in and out of the classroom to the numerous opportunities provided by Waukee. He highlights the support of his APEX instructor, Tyler Wright, who mentored him in his engineering career throughout high school and exposed him to different industries. Additionally, theater instructor Nate Jorgensen served as another influential mentor.

After graduating from Waukee, Jack pursued mechanical engineering at the University of Iowa. He developed a strong interest in aerodynamics and rocket engines, which became a focus of his project work. During his senior year, he designed the structure and aerodynamic mechanisms for a 3D-printed competition rocket.

Beyond his academic pursuits, Jack also engaged in extracurricular activities. He served as the vice president and project design lead for Iowa’s branch of the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics (AIAA). He was also actively involved in Dance Marathon and held leadership positions within the organization.

Jack’s leadership experiences and academic achievements landed him an internship at Collins Aerospace in the Mission Systems division. There, he worked with general, military, and defense aviation systems, gaining practical industry experience.

In May 2022, Jack graduated from the University of Iowa and joined NASA’s Flight Operations Directorate, also known as Mission Control, in June 2022. As a Propulsion Systems Flight Controller, he plays a crucial role in planning, training, and executing human spaceflight missions. Specifically, he supports the Orion and Space Launch System (SLS) vehicles for NASA’s Artemis program, overseeing the mission design and operation of the engines.

Apart from his responsibilities in Mission Control, Jack collaborates with NASA Engineering and Contracting companies to develop flight techniques and optimize vehicle performance in space.

Jack’s future at NASA looks promising as he aims to complete his flight controller certification and become a flight control team member. He also plans to pursue a master’s degree in engineering, although this goal is currently in the distance.

Reflecting on his journey, Jack advises future students to seize opportunities to learn from individuals further along similar paths. He emphasizes the importance of finding projects that interest them outside of academic requirements or work obligations, as personal and professional growth happens through facing and conquering challenges.

With his passion for space and engineering, Jack has become a mentor to young students and aspiring engineers. He is always available to connect and share insights on spaceflight, engineering, or aerospace through LinkedIn.
