UMC Upgrades Security System with AI Technology

UMC in Lubbock, Texas is set to upgrade its Security system this fall by implementing AI gun-detection-based security. This upgrade will make UMC one of the first hospitals in the region to utilize this advanced technology.

The AI technology, called Zeroeyes, will be integrated into the existing security cameras at UMC. Its primary function is to identify and detect guns. As people enter and exit the hospital, the system will automatically scan for any weapons, providing an additional layer of security.

Jeff Hill, UMC’s Senior Vice President of Support Services, emphasizes the importance of adapting to the changing societal landscape. He mentions recent incidents, such as those at Robb Elementary and Uvalde, as examples that highlight the need for increased security measures.

Once Zeroeyes detects a gun within the hospital, it will send a signal to the Zeroeyes security team. However, to prevent false alarms, human verification will be necessary. Hill appreciates the ability to override the AI’s decision, knowing that human interaction is crucial in such critical situations.

In the event of a verified threat, the local dispatch center and hospital staff will be immediately alerted for a prompt response. Furthermore, the system allows personnel to track the movement of individuals within the hospital, ensuring that they can follow anyone who may deviate from their expected location.

There are concerns among lawmakers regarding the regulation of AI, as it presents potential risks. However, Hill remains confident in the use of this type of AI technology for security purposes, stating that it is utilized for the greater good.

The main objective of implementing Zeroeyes is to identify the presence of guns, assess the threat level, and respond swiftly to prevent any shots from being fired. Hill emphasizes the intention to improve the overall safety and culture within UMC.

When the Zeroeyes system is integrated into UMC’s security cameras in August, the staff will undergo additional training to ensure appropriate and timely responses. The implementation of this technology aims to prevent mass shooter situations and ultimately save lives.

UMC’s decision to upgrade its security system with AI technology demonstrates their commitment to the safety of patients, staff, and visitors. By utilizing cutting-edge solutions like Zeroeyes, UMC sets a precedent for other healthcare facilities in the region and beyond. With the ability to detect firearms and respond efficiently, UMC aims to create a secure environment for everyone.
