Tesla allows owners to recharge with solar energy

Tesla’s latest move is a new feature for people who have seriously bought into their ecosystem.

Tesla drivers with home Solar and a Powerwall charger now have an in-app option to exclusively charge their vehicle through excess solar energy.

The car manufacturer began to implement the configuration In May, under a rather idyllic name: Drive on Sunshine. The stage is now called more directly “solar charging; is available to people in the US and Canada with newer (2021 and newer) Teslas. The option looks like this:

The rise of electric vehicles and the ubiquity of solar panels have led countless dreamers to suspect that the two technologies will converge.

The solar car as we know it dates back to the 1950s with GM’s Sunmobile, a modified Corvette that supposedly captured enough solar energy to roll across a stage at a Chicago auto show. Cars with sunroofs have come a long way since then (see: advocacy efforts). Light-year, Fisker, Karma, Toyota and even tesla), but these types of vehicles with sunroofs are not yet on the roads in large numbers.

Tesla, meanwhile, has long made it easy to charge with solar power via solar panels and home chargers, and the automaker’s Charge on Solar feature appears to offer select drivers another degree of control over how they recharge.
