Titanic Tourist Submersible: The Missing One

A tourist submersible on a tour to Titanic went missing on this Sunday (June 18, 2023). Despite continuous search and rescue operations, authorities have not yet located the sub with five renowned personnel on board. There are suspicions that the submarine may have become trapped in the wreckage of the Titanic, a site it was touring for admiration. The crew launched at around 4am on Sunday but lost communication with the mother ship. Just one hour and 45 minutes later.

Who Was On Board?

The missing sub, owned and operated by OceanGate Expedition, had five tourists on-board, including British billionaire Hamish Harding, company CEO Stockton Rush, French explorer PH Nargeolet and Harding. The sub aimed to dive 12,500ft underwater to tour The Great Titanic costing $250,000 on the expedition.

Titanic Tourist Submersible Rescue Operation:

The OceanGate web site says, the sub can last up to 96 hours under water with five people consuming oxygen. But more than 40 hours and the rescue teams are still struggling to find the missing sub.

The remote areas are now also under search using C-130 and P-8 as part of rescue teams.

Rear Admiral John W. Mauger in a press conference said that the US Coast Guard is working ‘as hard as possible’ to find the missing sub while ‘lives are at risk’.

The rescue mission is ‘very complicated,’ he said, given how far out at sea the sub is.

‘It’s a remote area and it is challenge to conduct a search in that area,’ Admiral Mauger said.

The wreckage is 370miles from Newfoundland in Canada but is in US waters.

Teams are using all possible ways to find the missing sub both on surface and under water.

Chris Parry, a retired rear admiral with the British Royal Navy, told Sky News a seabed rescue was “a very difficult operation”.

Expert Opinion on What Might Have Happened to Submersible?

It is still too early to make any opinion about what might actually happened to the missing sub? But experts have their own opinion about the incident. Some believe that the Sub might have tangled in the wrecked of Titanic. Others are of the view that there might be some technical or electrical/ power fault due to which the Sub lost its connection back with the base station.

Alistair Greig, a professor of marine engineering at University College London while giving his expert opinion says that there has been a leak in the pressure hull, in which case the prognosis is not good.
